How to make 5 minute chocolate layered pudding from scratch?

  1. Make Oreo crumbs: First, chop Oreo cookies in a food processor until they are fine crumbs.
  2. Add the cocoa: Then, add cocoa powder and spin it again until it is completely mixed.
  3. Make Oreo crust: Next, put half of the cocoa and cookie mixture into each glass bowl, pressing it down to make a smooth Oreo crust in each dish.
  4. Make the first pudding layer: After, pour milk and cornstarch into a medium saucepan and whisk until the cornstarch is dissolved. Add vanilla extract.
  5. Brown the sugar: Then, in a different pan, melt the sugar over low heat until it is brown. Pour in the milk mixture and let it simmer for two minutes.
  6. Add to dishes: Pour half of this creamy mixture into each glass bowl on top of the crust.
  7. Make chocolate pudding layer: Now, heat milk, sugar, vanilla, cornstarch, and cocoa powder in a clean saucepan. Whisk it all together and let it simmer over low heat until it is thick.
  8. Chill and serve: Lastly, pour half of the chocolate topping into each bowl on top of the pudding layer. Then sprinkle with cocoa powder, cover with plastic wrap, and chill for at least an hour before serving.

Recipe variations:

  • Mix in Oreos: Save some of the crushed Oreos for mixing into the pudding layers. Just use half the cookie crumbs for the crust and use the remaining crushed Oreos in the pudding mix.
  • Graham crackers: Alternatively, you could switch the Oreo cookies for graham cracker crumbs.
  • Heavy whipping cream: For extra creamy pudding, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Instead of plain milk, use sweetened condensed milk for an extra-sweet dessert.
  • Different Oreo flavors: Try a different flavor of Oreo cookie like peanut butter or chocolate fudge or make a vanilla version with golden Oreos instead.
  • Cream cheese mixture: Make a cream cheese layer by adding cream cheese to the vanilla pudding ingredients.
  • St. Patrick’s Day: Add green food coloring to the white layer for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make this with less fat and fewer calories?

If you are worried about nutrition, calories, and fat, you can always lighten the ingredients. For example, use skim milk instead of whole milk and sugar-free or fat-free Oreo cookies. You could also use Splenda or your own favorite sugar substitute instead of regular sugar. By substituting all of these, you will have way less fat and hardly any calories!

Why is my pudding runny?

There are several reasons why your pudding could turn out runny. First, make sure you are not mixing it too much or too vigorously. This can make it watery because the ingredients do not combine correctly. You also may not have cooked it enough. But the most common reason is that you did not put enough thickener in it. Add a little more cornstarch and heat it up again. Once it cools, it should be thicker.

What other cookies can I use?

You can change this recipe any way you like by simply using different cookie crumbs. For example, you can use sugar cookies, shortbread cookies, or your favorite fruit-flavored cookie crumbs. You could even use oatmeal, peanut butter, or chocolate chip cookies. Gingerbread for the holidays would be great too. Feel free to experiment.

What are the nutrition facts in this recipe?

Each serving of this delicious dessert has 289 calories, 20 grams fat, and 10 grams saturated fat as well as 40 mg cholesterol, 167 mg sodium, and 15 grams sugar. But you will also get 4 grams protein, 105 mg potassium, 2 grams fiber, 513 units vitamin A, 28 mg calcium, and 4 mg iron.

How to store leftovers:

  • Store: If you cannot finish your leftover chocolate Oreo dessert right away, put it in an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to three days.
  • Freeze: As previously mentioned, freezing this dessert gives it a wonderful texture like a cookie cake. Put it in a freezer-safe container and it will keep for up to six weeks.
  • Thaw: If you do not want to eat your chocolate pudding dessert frozen, thaw overnight in the fridge.

Recipe tips:

  • If you do not have a food processor, just put the cookies in a Ziploc bag and roll them with a rolling pin until you have fine crumbs.
  • Or you could use a large bowl and electric mixer or hand mixer.
  • Use instant pudding mix instead of making your own. You will need a small box of vanilla and a small box of chocolate instant pudding mix. Make sure it is instant and you will not even have to cook it.
  • To shorten prep time even more, why not use pudding that is already made?
  • Instead of using a saucepan, mix your pudding in a medium bowl over a pot of hot water.
  • Add a little melted butter to the crushed Oreos for a more solid crust. You can use unsalted or salted butter.
  • Use double stuff Oreos (double stuffed) for even more creaminess.
  • You could also make this in a cake pan and then scoop out individual servings.
