Why you will love this recipe

  • Perfect for hot summer days: Hot oats are for winter. These cold overnight oats are ideal for a summer treat. They are creamy and refreshing, with just the right amount of sweetness and crunch.
  • Great for meal prep: I like to fix them ahead of time and have breakfast ready for the week.
  • Versatile: I also add fruits, nuts, and other ingredients to make each breakfast unique.
  • Snacks on the go: These are also perfect for snacks on the go. My kids love them on road trips.

What you will need

  • Oats: I use whole rolled old-fashioned oats for the chewy and toothy texture. Steel-cut oats are too tough, and quick oats are too soft and mushy.
  • Yogurt and milk: Greek yogurt has the utmost creamy, thick, and silky texture. I like to use plain Greek yogurt. To make it more chocolatey, use chocolate flavor. I use almond milk for mine, but any other milk will work for this recipe. Coconut milk makes it richer and creamier.
  • Sweetener: Instead of honey or syrup, I add pistachio sauce for a nuttier, more complex, and creamier flavor that is even more luxurious and rich.
  • Mix-ins: I love the extra crunchiness and sweet nuttiness that chopped pistachios add. I also like to add some chia seeds for their protein and how they plump up to give the oats a thick and creamy consistency. Plus, chocolate chips for sweetness.
  • Toppings: Topped with kataifi, this finely shredded phyllo dough adds a crispy and caramelized topping for a delicate, sophisticated crunch. I cannot go without adding a final layer of chopped pistachios for extra crunch and flavor. A drizzle of extra pistachio and chocolate sauce on top adds a more decadent and enticing flavor to the oats.

How to make

Mix the ingredients: First, I mix the oats, yogurt, pistachio sauce, chocolate chips, chia seeds, and salt in a large jar or bowl with a lid.

Stir in the milk: Then, I add the milk and stir it thoroughly, making sure the seeds are not clumped together anywhere.

Chill overnight: Finally, I cover it and let it chill overnight. Sometimes, I separate it into single-serving jars with lids first, so they are handy.

Add toppings and serve: When I am ready, I add the toppings and serve them cold.

Expert tip

Use the right kind of oats

Since oats are the main ingredient, ensure they are the correct type. If they are too soft, they will be mushy. Too hard, and they will be chewy and tough. The ones that work best are the old-fashioned rolled oats. Do not get the steel-cut oats. They will not absorb the liquid properly and end up very chewy. They are made to be cooked for a long time.

Additionally, avoid instant or quick-cooking oats. They absorb liquid quickly and will become too soft after soaking for longer than an hour or two. After soaking them overnight, the oats will become mushy.

More tips to consider:

  • Don’t forget the salt. Believe it or not, it makes a difference in bringing out the other flavors.
  • Also, don’t skimp on the toppings. They add a lot of flavor and texture as well.
  • Give the oats time to soak. It takes at least six hours to absorb all the liquid and flavors.
  • If they are too thick, they can be thinned out with a bit of milk before serving.
  • Heating them up is fine. Start with 30 seconds in the microwave. Then, stir and continue heating for 10 seconds at a time until the mixture is thoroughly heated. Just be sure they are in a microwave-safe container.
  • Add fruits last so they do not get soggy.

Recipe variations and add-ins:

  • Chocolate yogurt: For more chocolatey yogurt, I use chocolate flavor, but other flavors are good, too.
  • Banana bread: To make this into chocolate banana bread oats, add ½ mashed banana, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  • Berries: Other fruits can also be added to make these oats more delicious, such as strawberries, cherries, raspberries, or blackberries.
  • Peanut butter: Another way my kids like these oats is with some peanut butter mixed in. This is one of their favorite ways to enjoy this breakfast or snack.
  • Use jam instead: Instead of using real fruit, mix in some of my instant pot strawberry jam. It’s incredibly easy to make in just about 30 minutes with only three ingredients.
  • Childhood favorites: Instead of chocolate, I sometimes use chopped apples and cinnamon for one of my childhood favorites or maple syrup and brown sugar for my husband’s favorite.

Serving suggestions:

When the weather starts getting warmer, I like to start making breakfasts colder. These Dubai chocolate overnight oats are perfect because I can make them ahead of time and serve them cold. I can grab one of these out of the fridge on the way to the gym or give them to the kids before school. They always love them with a strawberry banana smoothie.

If I want to serve them as an afterschool snack, I can always pair it with something light like strawberry lemonade or water. These delightful oat treats are so decadent and dreamy that they can also be served at a ladies’ brunch with a festive homemade mimosa or glass of orange juice.

How to store leftovers:

  • Refrigerate: Pack Dubai chocolate overnight oats in containers with lids, and they will stay fresh in the fridge for up to three days.
  • Freezing: Freezing is not recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my overnight oats runny?

The reason for this is usually due to excessive liquid intake. Using too much liquid will mean that the oats cannot absorb it all, resulting in a watery texture. It may also be that they did not have enough time to absorb all the liquid. Stir them thoroughly and let them soak for another few hours.

How can I make my oats thicker?

To fix this, it is better to add more chia seeds rather than to add more oats. Adding more oats may cause them to become dry and tasteless. The chia seeds will make them creamier and thicker. If chia seeds are not being used, strain the oats over a fine strainer, and they should thicken up while still tasting great.

Why are my Dubai chocolate overnight oats hard?

On the other hand, if not enough liquid is used, the oats may turn out stiff or hard. They need plenty of milk and other liquids to absorb to become soft. This can also happen if they have not soaked long enough. If there is still liquid in the bowl, they still need to soak. However, if there is no more liquid, add some milk and let them soak for a longer period.

What is the liquid-to-oats ratio?

The most important thing to note is that the liquid-to-oat ratio is 2:1. This means that the liquid should be two cups for every cup of oats. This includes the milk, pistachio sauce, yogurt, and any other liquids being used. Therefore, if any other liquids are added, they must be combined in the ratio to adjust the amount of oats.
